This was the best site we have been to, with a lovely atmosphere, we would love to return. Not too big or expensive, friendly and helpful staff, an excellent restaurant with wholesome homemade food and a daily bread van. A farmers market cart supplied fresh eggs and vegetables. It was lovely to see the animals, hens and chicks wandering around the campsite, and the children were allowed to pet the guinea pigs, pigs and hens. The Cantina is a very pleasant communal area with a selection of books and artefacts that can be browsed.
From the moment we arrived this was different to most commercial sites. We were personally taken around the site to find a pitch that would suit our needs as in proximity to facilities or peacefulness and the amount and time we wanted sun or shade. There were hens with their little chicks wandering around and a pen with guinea pigs, turkey and pot bellied pig which you were encouraged to feed with your fruit and vegetable parings. Although this was at the top of ACSI price bracket with no pool yet there was complementary coffee in the mornings and delicious free homemade soup and bread on Friday evenings. These touches were to encourage campers to socialise. The beaches like Whalebone beach were deserted expanses of sand a cycle ride away.
For once the description in the ASCI book is spot on. Can't complement this site enough, the Dutch owners are very friendly, and always on hand to help in any way they can. This is reflected in the general feeling of ambience on the site.
A different site than we had experience before but most enjoyable - like a forest site with hens and geese wandering freely (with accompanying flies and midges!) We didn't see much of Hans or Irene but they were always available when needed. There is much to see on the site and a wander round is definitely worthwhile. Every corner turned reveals another interesting aspect and the whole clearly defines the owners personality and interests of "getting back to nature". The surrounding area is lacking much of interest (for us at least) but the closest beach is only a 15 minute drive away. The facilities were clean and well maintained and there was always plenty of hot water. The cantina was closed for food but again is a fascinating place to visit and view. The swimming pool was still open but did not look particularly welcoming - that said, it was towards the end of the season and it should have closed earlier and I would guess it was low down on the list of priorities for maintenance. Bread is available at 0830hrs, delivered by the local bakery - listen for the vehicle horn which announces the arrival. There is an old caravan which serves as a library but this smelt somewhat damp. There are yurts (very well furnished), turbos (accommodation in large pipes!) and bungalows. All in all a fascinating site and well worth a visit if passing or if one wants to get back to nature. When we left, there was only one other couple on site but I can imagine that when more people are there and the cantina is open it would be a lively and fun place to stay.
This is the second time we have stayed at this relaxed and laid back rural site. Hans and Irene are good hosts and provide excellent food. The local information they provide is excellent and enables you to discover the hidden gems of this area.
We are from the USA and thought that this was a GREAT site. Hans even cooked out of season for a great accordion playing group. The dinner was like a Medieval feast. Hans and Irena have the greatest personalities. Honest and earthy. I would only find a non toxic spray to diminish the mosquitoes. Seems to be a sub tropical area and they are present all year. Loved the zoo like environment.
We arrived towards the end of the season and were one of three motorhomes on the site. The site gives you the feeling of being back to nature with Geese and Chickens wandering around freely, dawn chorus wasn't too noisy either. Understandably, there wasn't much activity from the bar and restaurant being off season. The church clock has an interesting chime on the hour and half past you could almost sing along to. The toilets were clean and well maintained. The campsite, I believe has two ranges of power, one at 6 amps and one at 16 amps? Obviously you pay more for the higher amperage.
Hans (the friendly Dutch Owner) recommended a restaurant in the village of Paiao called O Peleiro and I can confirm it's well worth a visit. The staff speak good English and the food is delicious and not too expensive, they can also be found on Facebook.
I would certainly recommend this campsite to my fellow travellers.
