Nearly didn't stay on this site after reading reviews. But glad we did. Site better than we expected with plenty of choice of pitches at end of May. Well worth stopping over for the night to visit the lovely Cathedral and old town which we reached via the river path at the back of the site.
The location is good. Most of the walk into town is through a park alongside the river. The centre of the town is on top of a hill, so the last bit of the walk is uphill. We didn't find the toilet/shower facilities too bad - they are dated but with that you get more space. The pitches were on grass which had not been cut and were not very pleasant. I have to agree with previous comments regarding unhelpful staff. It rained heavily the last night we were there and I got stuck in the mud. When I asked for help none was forthcoming - I think I was advised in extremely rapid French, that I should have got up in the middle of the night and moved. Other English people on site also found the staff unhelpful.
We arrived at the site after a long drive to find the receptionist extremely rude. She slammed the doors, tutted under her breath and muttered throughout. She was unable to answer our questions and made us feel extremely unwelcome. The pitches were covered in litter, we were not shown the pitches available or where the toilet block was. We decided to turn around straight away and left after requesting our money back as the site insisted we pay up front!
Cheap municipal site and ideal for a couple of nights while site seeing. Possibly the most ignorant, unwelcoming staff I've ever encountered. Made Basil Fawlty seem welcoming.
This camp site was Ok but suffering a bit with end of season fatigue. Allthough the site notes say the river flows past, it is not accessable or visible. The walk into the town is up hill all the way and I think they should say this in the comments. The small take away had closed before the end of September. I think people might have wanted frites or pizza depending on the distance they had travelled. We did find some parking in the town. The visit to Chartres was very good we really enjoyed ourselves. We did have a long way to go to plug our electricity in. In some of the site places there seemed to be no electric plug in. Now that we know the camp site we would make another visit if we needed an overnight stay.
This camp site is extremely poor compared with many others we stayed on in France. The staff in Reception were extremely un-helpful and the pitches were generally run-down even allowing for the lateness of the season. The Disabled Toilet and shower were dirty and were not cleaned as far as I could see in the four days we were here. A good site for leaving for the day by train to visit Paris!!! The site is a very bad advert for such a fine city as Chartres.
In our opinion, this site is not as bad as some of the recent reviews imply. Admittedly, the lady on reception was 'unfriendly' (my wife would say rude), but once checked in, we had a good stay. The sanitary facilities were acceptable (certainly no worse than many French sites) but would probably be inadequate if the site had been full. For us, the easy access from the site to the town by foot/cycle path out-weighed any shortcomings. Try to see 'Chartres en Lumieres', where a number of buildings, including the Cathedral, are imaginatively illuminated after dark.
Our stay at this site was spoilt by the attitude and poor service offered by the Female Receptionist together with the total lack of information she offered. For example: Not one smile during our 2 day stay, neglected to inform us where to (a)pitch our motorhome, she insisted on simply waving her hands about when I asked where I could pitch. More importantly she neglected to inform me that there had been a lot of rain in that region so most of the site was waterlogged, naturally when trying to pitch on a site the motorhome sank into the wet soil and we had to summon the help of other nearby campers to dig us out. The lady in question was not interested in our plight when I pointed this out to her and ignored my requests for a complaints form to report the matter. The same lady gave no interesting information to us as to where the town centre/cathedral was or how we could get there, one again, other campers gave us the information we requested. The facilities can only be described as Basic.
Definitely run down, toilets not good, walk to cathedral was purpose of our visit and this we enjoyed. However an open air concert in the playing field opposite (20.00 till 23.30) was very loud we felt sorry for anyone with young children.
This campsite would not survive if it was not within walking distance of Chartres. Having been on many ACSI sites in France on our recent trip which were all good to excellent this one was awful. Like all France the weather had been very wet so the site was very muddy. That seemed of little concern to the staff who just suggested find a pitch you won't sink in. It was perhaps unfortunate the caravan behind was full of youngsters who had music and loud talk until 12.30 am keeping us awake. We should have guessed their attitude as earlier one occupant walked straight through everyone else's pitches. However, the worst had to be the toilets. The site was very busy and just 4 toilets each for each sex which was woefully inadequate. Worse the men's had one sit on and three the hated Turkish which were plastered with excrement. We used our campervan one. Either the hot water or the cold worked in the basins never both. We will never use this site again, but Bonneval or Vendom both great.
